RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY CO-GENERATION

Sugar Cane

The company manages 23 418 hectares of land. Of that, 11 648 hectares is area under cane. Ubombo Sugar sources 55% of its sugar cane from independent out-grower farmers in Eswatini.

Small scale growers supply about 28% of cane to the Ubombo mill under the LUSIP project. Large scale growers supply 25% and 1.9% comes from medium scale growers. This is a representation of the significant support to the livelihoods of small, rural farmers and surrounding communities.

Sugar

Ubombo produces approximately 250 000 tons of sugar annually.

It is one of three sugar producers in the country whose combined total sugar output of approximately 670 000 tons is marketed and distributed by the Eswatini Sugar Association (ESA), with sales to the SACU market, preferential markets in the EU and USA, as well as regional markets (Africa).

Electricity Co-Generation

Following the commissioning of a major factory expansion and power co-generation project worth E1.3 billion in April 2011, the company has ventured into the production of electricity.

Ubombo satisfies all of its own electricity needs and was the first independent power producer in Eswatini, and the Illovo Group, to supply power using bio-renewable resources to the national grid on a commercial basis.

On average, the company produces 165 Giga Watt Hours (GWH) of electricity annually, of which 60 GWH is supplied to the Eswatini Electricity Company.
